10/7/2023 0 Comments Raspberry pi plex server 4kTo stream 4K media from a Raspberry Pi, you'd need to make sure the content is always in a codec supported by your playback device, and you'd need to never try to watch those 4K files on a screen that can't play in 4K.If you intend to have a media server that can be accessed by everyone then this is for you, you can also set it to be accessed outside the local network. Plex can detect this and automatically transcode to a format the player can handle, so you'd need to transcode to watch those files on those players. Most devices can play H.264 MP4, some can handle other formats, but a lot of media you find is in an mkv or other file format that your smart TV or android device or whatever might not support. Server-side transcoding is necessary when streaming to a player that either doesn't support the codec of the source video file or wants to play it back in a different quality/resolution/bitrate than the source (either for bandwidth reasons or because the TV/display has a lower resolution than source).
